Farm Safety Facts: A Risky Place to Work

Farming is among the most dangerous U.S. professions. Tractor rollovers are deadly. They're the leading cause of fatal farm incidents. On average, 150–200 operators die annually in the U.S. when tractors overturn. Non-fatal injuries are widespread as well. Around 21,020 agricultural injuries required time away from work between 2021–2022, with falls causing nearly 30% of those.

With nearly six times the fatality rate of other industries and an injury bill topping $11 billion a year, it's clear: farm safety isn't optional. It's a must.

At Browning Insurance Agency, LLC we believe that safety is your first line of defense. Here's what you and your team can do today to lower the risk:

1. Inspect Equipment Before Every Use

Look for leaks, worn belts, tire damage, and loose parts. Catching small issues early helps avoid serious mechanical failure in the field.

2. Keep Guards and Shields in Place

Never operate machinery without PTO guards or safety covers. They're designed to prevent some of the most gruesome and common injuries.

3. Don't Disable Safety Features

Seat switches and automatic shutoffs may feel inconvenient—but they exist for a reason. Don't bypass them.

4. Take PTO Safety Seriously

Always disengage the PTO (Power Take-Off) and shut off the engine before doing any maintenance. One mistake here can mean permanent injury—or worse.

5. One Seat Means One Rider

No passengers on tractors or machinery unless there's a designated seat and belt. Riding on fenders or steps is never safe.

6. Be Road-Ready

Use lights, reflectors, and slow-moving vehicle (SMV) signs when taking equipment on the road—especially at dawn or dusk.

7. Shut Down Before You Walk Away

Always turn off the engine, lower implements, set the brake, and remove the key before stepping off the machine.

8. Train Before Tasking

Make sure every operator is trained on each piece of machinery. Familiarity saves lives.

Safety is key but Coverage is necessary.
